Online purchases of medications are on the rise and the less hassle involved is cited by a majority as one of the main reasons. This is of course secondary to the fact that most online pharmacies, especially from Canada are able to offer medicines at just a fraction of the cost of what the same drug is sold at a US brick and mortar pharmacy. However, a question which plagues most first time customers is whether the quality is up to standards, as prices are so low.

A group of scientists at Department of Medicine, Division of Clinical Epidemiology at the Samuel Lunenfeld Research Institute, Mount Sinai Hospital, University of Toronto, Canada recently published their suggestions on shortening the evaluation process for Metformin and outlined “the key steps that will optimize development of this agent in breast cancer”.

Many of the mega meds are seeing the end of patents and generic versions of best-selling drugs have been approved by health bodies as FDA and Health Canada. Last month, Zioptan (tafluprost ophthalmic solution), Preservative-Free Ophthalmic Medication by Merck was approved by US Food and Drug Administration (FDA). Zioptan is used for reducing increased blood pressure in the eye in patients with glaucoma. The drug is also approved for use in patients with high eye pressure (ocular hypertension) which may lead to glaucoma. Estimated 4.5 million people face blindness due to glaucoma and glaucoma is the second leading cause for blindness.

US Food and Drugs Administration ( FDA ) recently approved the birth control pill, Natazia for the use in USA.  The pill was available in Europe under the brand name Qlaira. The combined oral contraceptive pill contains synthetic hormones Estradiol Valerate and Dienogest. The pill comes in a 28-day pack with 26 active tablets and 2 inert tablets. The 28-day pack provides a four phase regimen that delivers the varying amounts of hormones to give an effective prevention of pregnancy. Natazia is the first four-phase oral contraceptive approved in the U.S.
